Yes isn't it amazing how one offhand crumb of encouragement from someone else can change entire perceptions! I absolutely love your "first" (!) oil painting - such a talent. I also appreciate the upbeat flavour of your posts and accompanying quotes - thank you, especially today! xo

First of all have a very special birthday Lesley.

Aiming for my own style in drawing releases a lot of stress and the need to compare with others. Thanks Lesley!

The Picasso quote is so me. Always trying new things once I feel like I have mastered the last! I always tell people to start drawing now. You have to be able to draw to do most “fine art”. Even abstract painters usually have a foundation in drawing.

Yes, Picasso was quite the traditional artist when he started. He can teach us so much. Tanks for the comment.

I am currently in a life, drawing group reconnecting to a practice that I first encountered in high school when I won an award for crafts and was granted the opportunity to take a life drawing class at a college in New York. I was so entranced with that first experience, the power of being able to look Directly at the human figure and be amazed.

Life drawing is amazing. There was a long stretch for me, too, between life drawing classes. The second time around, I was the newbie in the class, trying to learn my skills all over again. It would be interesting to give it another go at this point in my life. Just listened to Jenny Saville on A Brush With podcast. She left me with lots to explore. So did the Amy Sillman interview.

Lesley, Your post reminded me of the class I took at Ivy Tech back in the 90s. I had no idea that I wasn't really seeing before then. And then taking a class with Jane LaFazio, I was amazed that I could draw! You are so talented. Great essay. Happy Birthday!

Many thanks, Lynda. Jane is really good at teaching us to draw. It's so rewarding to be able to really see and understand.

Thanks, Wendy. For some reason, your comment didn’t show up on my page. It's always good to know you get something of value from my writing. xox
